Justice Products

Fair Trading for a Just World

Every time you purchase a product your choice affects the people and communities that produce it. Justice Products aims to make these choices as informed and ethical as possible.

Many people are concerned about the substandard conditions and wages that workers face around the world. Our suppliers deal directly with the producers of tea, coffee and craft in the developing world, using the values of Fair Trade - so producers get a better deal and greater security.

Justice Products also stocks goods made by local artisans, co-operatives and small family businesses. We are proud of our growing range of recycled paper products, environmentally friendly cleaning products and personal care products made in Australia.

Procurement

At Justice Products we find out as much as we can about the origins of a product before making a decision to stock it.

Some of the qualities we look for are:

  • Fair Trade principles - craft made by a Fair Trade certified producer; coffee from a co-operative operating under Fair Trade standards
  • Environmental sustainability - paper made with recycled materials; toxic-free cleaning products; shampoo made with organically-grown ingredients
  • Local production - bags made by a Brisbane crafts-person; honey from a local bee-keeper
All of our products fulfill at least one, and usually more, of these criteria.

Beginnings…

Justice Products was initiated by the Catholic Worker Community in 1985. The Catholic Worker Community, an “intentional community” in Brisbane, was founded on the principles of providing hospitality and refuge to the poorest people in the community, non-violent resistance, self-help and mutual aid. The community pooled its resources and began cottage industries to support its activities, such as vegetable soap production, bread baking and bottling honey.

Members of the Catholic Worker Community wanted to find an outlet for their own products and wished to support the activities of co‑operative producers from overseas.
Justice Products began with the aim of filling this need in the community.

…and today

Justice Products is now an on-going project of Spiral Community Hub and continues as a not-for-profit shop, following the principles of Fair Trade and community participation.
